No dia 23 de Abril é celebrado o dia da soberania nacional e o dia das crianças na Turquia. Esse feriado comemora a criação da Grande Assembléia Nacional da Turquia em Ankara. Em 23 de abril de 1920, durante a Guerra da Independência, a Grande Assembléia Nacional reuniu-se em Ankara para começar a estabelecer as bases da nova república turca após o fim do Império Otomano.

Para marcar o evento, 23 de abril foi proclamado um feriado nacional e Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, o fundador da República Turca, dedicou o dia 23 de abril para as crianças da Turquia, para reconhecer que as crianças são o futuro da nação. E desde 1927 essa data tornou-se também o Dia das Crianças.

Todos os anos, as escolas participam de diversas cerimônias com uma semana de duração, marcadas por performances em grandes estádios vistos por toda a nação. Entre as atividades neste dia, as crianças enviam seus representantes para substituir os funcionários estaduais e burocratas em seus escritórios.
O presidente turco, o primeiro-ministro, os ministros e governadores todos passam as suas posições as crianças representantes escolhidas. Essas crianças, por sua vez, assinam ordens executivas relativas às políticas educacionais e ambientais e as crianças também substituem os parlamentares na Grande Assembléia Nacional e realizam uma sessão especial para discutir assuntos relacionados as crianças.
Em 1979, a UNICEF reconheceu este dia nacional como um evento internacional. E desde o reconhecimento, foram feitos esforços para internacionalizar esse dia. Esses esforços resultaram em um grande número de países que enviam grupos de crianças para a Turquia para participar nas festividades. Durante a sua estadia na Turquia, as crianças estrangeiras são alojadas em casas turcas e têm a oportunidade de interagir com as crianças turcas e elas podem conhecer mais sobre outos países e sobre a cultura de cada um. As crianças estrangeiras também participam da sessão especial da Assembléia Nacional.

On 23 April is celebrated the National Sovereignty and Children’s Day in Turkey. This holiday commemorates the start of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in Ankara. On 23 April 1920, during the War of Independence, the Grand National Assembly met in Ankara to begin to lay the foundations of the new Turkish republic after the end of the Ottoman Empire.

To mark the event, 23 April was proclaimed a national holiday in 1921 and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, dedicated 23 April to the children of Turkey to recognize that children are the future of the nation. And since 1927 it has also become Children’s Day.

Every year, schools participate in week-long ceremonies marked by performances in large stadiums watched by the entire nation. Among the activities on this day, the children send their representatives to replace state officials and bureaucrats in their offices.

The Turkish President, the Prime Minister, the Ministers and governors all turn over their positions to children’s representatives. These children sign executive orders relating to educational and environmental policies and the children also replace the parliamentarians in the Grand National Assembly and hold a special session to discuss matters concerning children’s issues.

In 1979, UNICEF recognized this national day as an international event. And since the recognition, efforts have been made to internationalize the day. Their efforts resulted in large number of countries sending children to Turkey to participate in the festivities. During their stay in Turkey, the foreign children stay in Turkish homes and have an opportunity to interact with the Turkish kids and learn about each other’s countries and cultures. The foreign children also participate in the special session of the Grand National Assembly.
